Umar Nurmagomedov defeated Cory Sandhagen at UFC Abu Dhabi via unanimous decision ( 49-46 x2 and 50-45) The fight was an extremely close contest with all the rounds being very tightly contested. However, Umar did enough in all the rounds to take them. Umar showed great skills standing up with Cory Sandhagen and proved that he can competitive in the striking aspects of fighting with some of the best in the world which he did prove against Sandhagen. Sandhagen showed great takedown defence, and stopped the wrestling threat from Umar and got up whenever the fight did get taken down to the ground.

Umar Nurmagomedov will now go up against the winner of the UFC Noche main event between Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili as per UFC president Dana White. Umar has stated that he will be at the sphere and is hoping to fight for the title at the start of next year before he starts the holy month of Ramadan. Umar Nurmagomedov winning the world title would make him the third world champion of one of the major organisation in the Nurmagomedov family with his brother Usman being the Bellator lightweight champion and his cousin being the legendary Khabib Nurmagomedov.
